CPR TrainingYou never know when an unexpected emergency may occur. Here at Ruston Paving, we try to prepare our employees for any situation that they may encounter, which is why our Director of Field Operations, Al Dominy, has been instructing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training to the Ruston Paving workforce. With all of our divisions getting back into the swing of the season, it is a prime time to renew our commitment to safety. Offering CPR training gives our employees vital safety skills that are important both on and off the job.

Snowing in NYFixing a Paver

The weather outside might be frightful – our Syracuse office wins the prize as over 3 feet of snow has fallen there in the past week. However, inside all our shops, our mechanics are diligently servicing and repairing our equipment as they prepare our fleet for the upcoming paving season. The construction season certainly takes its toll on all things mechanical. Thankfully our Ruston Paving shop personnel have the know-how to get things in tip-top shape.

Paving Military RoadNot far from the Candian border, Ruston Paving completed yet another project for our repeat customer, the Village of Sackets Harbor. A quaint town overlooking Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor has enlisted the help of Ruston Paving for over seven years.

Our crews set out to shim and overlay the road, which was in need of some TLC. After ridding Military Road of former dips and rough patches, the Village is very pleased that its occupants can cruise smoothly down this main drag once again.

Stretch n Flex (Durham)Stretch n Flex (Rochester)

Ruston Paving recently implemented a daily Stretch ‘n’ Flex program for all our employees. Just like an athlete who needs to stretch before a game, our workers are no different. The program’s stretches can prepare the body for everyday work stresses. This is done through stretching and strengthening the specific muscles that are commonly associated with strains and sprains.  When performed regularly before physical work, these exercises will reduce the incidences of muscle strains and sprains. Pictured are our Durham, NC and Rochester, NY divisions stretching following their weekly safety toolbox talk.

2015 Clarkson Scholarship WinnerClarkson University’s Construction Engineering Management (CEM) program has awarded the 2014-15 Ruston Paving Scholarship to a civil engineering student.

Jacob Bohnert ’16 of Sherburne, N.Y., was selected for his academic achievements and student involvement throughout campus. He serves as the captain of the Steel Bridge Team, which is part of Clarkson’s Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design (SPEED) program.

“The satisfaction I felt knowing that someone understands and respects the time and effort put into my studies is irreplaceable, and provides the motivation to achieve greater,” Bohnert said. “A Ruston Paving Scholarship is more than a monetary value — it’s a step toward the future for an internship or the beginning of a career.”

Lang Butler, vice president of Ruston Paving, said Bohnert stood out as an applicant for his direct interest in the paving industry and his hands-on internship experiences.

“Mr. Bohnert is the kind of candidate that represents our vision for our scholarship recipient,” he said.

Ruston Paving, a commercial and industrial asphalt paving and site work contractor, supports the Construction Engineering Management program at Clarkson through financial and other means.  The professional concentration in Construction Engineering Management is available to civil engineering students to focus their electives on courses pertinent to the field of construction engineering management.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.

A special note of thanks to Annie Harrison, Clarkson University’s social media manager, who put together the press release.

The end of one construction season brings Ruston Paving the dawn of another. As 2015 will mark our 72nd year in business, we hope this will be our best year ever. It is this wish we also hope for everyone.

Happy New Year!
