CPR TrainingYou never know when an unexpected emergency may occur. Here at Ruston Paving, we try to prepare our employees for any situation that they may encounter, which is why our Director of Field Operations, Al Dominy, has been instructing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training to the Ruston Paving workforce. With all of our divisions getting back into the swing of the season, it is a prime time to renew our commitment to safety. Offering CPR training gives our employees vital safety skills that are important both on and off the job.

Stretch n Flex (Durham)Stretch n Flex (Rochester)

Ruston Paving recently implemented a daily Stretch ‘n’ Flex program for all our employees. Just like an athlete who needs to stretch before a game, our workers are no different. The program’s stretches can prepare the body for everyday work stresses. This is done through stretching and strengthening the specific muscles that are commonly associated with strains and sprains.  When performed regularly before physical work, these exercises will reduce the incidences of muscle strains and sprains. Pictured are our Durham, NC and Rochester, NY divisions stretching following their weekly safety toolbox talk.

While the winter weather has caused us to curtail construction operations in some of our markets, our employees have been using the down-time to receive valuable training on new pieces of equipment and best construction practices.

We provided safety training as directed by CSX Railroad that is required so we can work safely as we repair track crossings. We also had instructors come to our offices from Wirtgen America to train our employees on the newest reclaimers, milling machines and pavers Ruston Paving owns and operates. These classes taught our employees factory-recommended best practices for machine operation and maintenance, which allows them to effectively and efficiently utilize the equipment on the job.

Excavator SimulatorExcavator Simulator 2

Recently, Ruston Paving got to participate in a unique experience. The Mebane branch of Gregory Poole CAT invited our Durham division to a demonstration of a Caterpillar excavator simulator. As Gregory Poole is trying to start an operator training school at Alamance Community College, they can use the simulator as a way to teach the basics of operations to students.

While one of our grading foremen Jeff Corlis is no rookie, he had a chance to give this machinery a test run. Seems very educational and a little fun to boot!

Public SpeakerCongrats are in order for two Ruston Paving employees. Ben Mallalieu, project manager,  and Tim McConnell, pavement and soils specialist, are our most recent graduates of the Dale Carnegie “Skills for Success” program. The famous Dale Carnegie course is focused on mastering organizational communication skills for the business world. This is another great accomplishment on their already shining resumes. Congratulations!

CPR TrainingAs we delve into new projects in the 2014 season, Ruston Paving has taken on a new safety project as well. Director of Field Operations Al Dominy has been bouncing between divisions to instruct Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid training to the Ruston Paving workforce.

Here are a few Rochester employees getting hands on CPR practice as part of the training course. With first aid and CPR under their belts, our employees are safer both on and off the job site!

Paving SeminarDurham Paving crews took advantage of the bad weather to attend a paving and compaction seminar put on by Linder Industrial Machinery of Raleigh and The Wirtgen Group, which was held at NC State University’s McKimmon Center.

By participating in seminars such as this, our crews learn about the latest technologies and best paving practices.  This ensures Ruston Paving can always provide the best product and service to our clients.

Wirtgen Paver TrainingThough it’s still snowy in New York, we’re gearing up for spring and getting employees ready for another year of paving. Thus, Ruston Paving invited Wirtgen America to host a clinic in our Rochester shop. This annual Q & A training session covered information on our Wirtgen paver including performing proper inspections of the paver, making adjustments to the equipment, and other maintenance and use inquiries.  Shop and crew members from both the Syracuse and Rochester divisions were in attendance.  Teamed up with Wirtgen paving representative Tom Knowles, it proved to be a highly productive session.

Art MetcalfCongratulations are in order for Ruston Paving employee Art Metcalf. Art, the general superintendent for our Greensboro division, recently completed further Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training and is now authorized to teach the OSHA 10 and 30 hour classes. As an authorized trainer, Art will help keep our workers and supervisors safe on the job.

Vogele TrainingWe’re always striving to “sharpen the saw” here at Ruston Paving. Today was no different as we had the regional product support manager for Vogele America, in our Syracuse shop to give some hands-on training on our new Vogele paver. Our Syracuse and Rochester mechanics, along with some other key employees, learned the ins and outs of this state of the art asphalt paver. Thanks for all your help, Tom!
